What is an SRT file?
SRT (SubRip Subtitle) is the most widely supported subtitle format. Each cue has a number, a start and end time, and the line of text shown on screen.
Almost every editor and player reads it, including Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro (via import), CapCut, VLC and YouTube Studio itself.
Common uses for downloaded YouTube subtitles
- Re-editing your own video and keeping the captions in sync
- Starting a translation from an existing timed transcript
- Burning captions into clips for TikTok, Reels and Shorts
- Checking and correcting auto-generated captions before re-uploading
- Accessibility review of video content
Frequently asked questions
- Is the YouTube SRT downloader free?
- Yes. Downloading .srt files from videos that publish captions is free and unlimited.
- Can I download auto-generated subtitles?
- Yes. When a video only has YouTube's auto-generated captions, those are what you'll get in the .srt file.
- Can I get subtitles in a specific language?
- You can download any caption language the video publishes. Use the language buttons on the transcript page to switch tracks.
- Why is there no .srt for AI transcripts?
- AI transcription of uploaded audio returns plain text without timing, so only caption-based transcripts can be saved as .srt.
